When McDonald’s announced a new limited edition combo for the holidays, food lovers were thrilled to try out the tasty treat. But when the fast food chain introduced the upgraded Quarter Pounder and Oreo McFlurry, folks were not impressed. With a smoky meets sweet, bacon meets chocolate flavor experience, the Smoky BLT Quarter Pounder with Cheese and Oreo Fudge McFlurry received mostly negative reviews from foodies who maligned the “it combo” of the season.
In a Reddit thread about the holiday menu item, the major complaint was that the eatery wasn’t doing anything new. The top-voted comment summed up the overall sentiment that McDonald’s used to be more innovative with new offerings. But now it’s just sauce. “This all already exists,” one person wrote, referencing the original Quarter Pounder and Oreo McFlurry.
Another person echoed the consensus saying, “All the interesting items are on the other side of the world. Here [in the U.S] we get the same old stuff with a marketing twist.” Someone else didn’t even think the items were a valid marketing ploy, arguing that customers can already choose to add fudge to an Oreo McFlurry. The entire thread continues in this fashion, with unhappy folks voicing their displeasure with McDonald’s.
Although McDonald’s tried to stay true to the Quarter Pounder with the upgrade, it seems like a swing and a miss for the fast food giant. The Smoky BLT version features a 100% fresh beef quarter-pound patty, topped with two slices of melted American cheese. It also has thick-cut Applewood Smoked bacon, fresh Roma tomatoes, shredded lettuce and a special smoky sauce served on a toasted sesame seed bun for a savory touch.
For extra hungry customers, McDonald’s is also offering a Double Smoky BLT Quarter Pounder with Cheese, which includes two hamburger patties. Meanwhile, the Oreo Fudge McFlurry adds a delicious hot fudge twist to the original dessert. It blends the eatery’s classic, creamy vanilla soft serve with hot fudge topping and Oreo cookie pieces thereby creating the perfect sweet sensation.
McDonald’s holiday menu items will be available at participating restaurants across the United States from November 21st for a limited time, while stocks last. While they might not be for everyone, the tasty treats offer fans a cool twist on a familiar favorite. Meanwhile, food lovers in the U.K are also unhappy after the eatery announced that it will be doing away with plastic cutlery.
The fast-food giant said it will be replacing them with paper versions to be more environmentally friendly. The new cutlery is made from renewable, Forest Stewardship Council-certified pressed paper, which is better for the environment than plastic. Speaking to Express, Nina Prichard, Head of Sustainable and Ethical Sourcing at McDonald’s, said, “We’re committed to taking action on packaging and waste and increasing our use of sustainable materials.”
However, unhappy customers took to social media to express their disappointment and anger following the announcement. “Eating with your hands would be more successful than paper cutlery,” one person wrote. While another said, “McDonald’s paper straws are beyond a joke and fall apart whilst using them. Just use a lid with a hole to sip your drinks instead.” Someone else said they would keep a proper set of cutlery in the car if they knew the alternative was paper.
