A Walmart worker in Indiana has been accused of stealing thousands of dollars while on the job. An investigation into the matter began in May when Walmart Asset Protection visited the Evansville Police Department to report the theft. Authorities said they were told that Kyesha Moredock had possibly taken about $225,000. They were also provided with surveillance footage of the employee violating the company’s cash control procedure.
The video showed the Walmart worker taking money to her car from April through May, which totaled $46,000. That was the only portion of the theft captured on camera, 14News reports. When questioned about the theft, Moredock denied the allegations and blamed the loss on a software glitch. According to Evansville police, the staffer said she worked at the retailer for two years. She also explained that part of her job was to take money to and from the self-checkout registers.
When asked about the incriminating video footage, the Walmart worker admitted to violating the company’s cash control policy but did not admit to stealing the money. Authorities added that Moredock eventually requested an attorney which prompted officers to stop the interview. The woman has since been arrested and faces several charges of theft, according to Newsweek. Interestingly, a May 2022 report by Fit Small Business states that 88% of employee theft cases include attempts to hide fraud.
The news a few months after another Walmart worker admitted to letting customers steal. In a video shared to TikTok in July, Brandon who worked as a door greeter explained how his responsibilities included checking receipts as customers left the store. He also said there were times when people had essential items in bags that weren’t paid for. But he chose not to report it. Instead, he allowed these folks to leave with various items at no cost to themselves. “When I checked the receipt and saw Pampers or baby formula [in the cart] that was not on the receipt, I just said ‘Have a great day,’” he explained in the video.
At the time, the Walmart worker said he allowed people to shoplift because those items are expensive and “kids are expensive in general.” He added that the company does little to incentivize employees for reporting stolen items, even though they urge staff to be on top of it. “Did I care? No. Because I was making $11.50 during that time,” he said about his hourly wage. Brandon also noted that asset protection employees, who provide security in stores, were often very upset when he let people steal. Interestingly, the TikToker said his actions don’t condone theft.
While some Walmart workers see fit to steal, the company is soldiering on with a new accusation. According to Reuters, the retail giant has launched a $377.6 million offer to purchase the remaining 47% of South African retailer Massmart, valuing it at a premium of over 50%. The firm had previously acquired a 51% stake in 2010 for $2.3 billion. The investment was seen as an outlay to use South Africa as a base to grab a share of the “African growth story.”
