Streaming services are hugely popular in the realm of entertainment. They are cheaper than cable/satellite services and they’re more convenient for on-demand programming. Now, Hulu is upping its game by offering new and select returning subscribers its basic, ad-supported tier for just $1 a month for the first three months. The regular price for the specified package is $6.99 (with ads) and $12.99 for the ad-free version.
Hulu’s discount offer was announced last Friday as a tie-in with National Streaming Day. After the promotional $1 per month rate ends, subscribers will automatically be billed at the regular $6.99 price. So users who don’t plan on staying with the streamer after the offer expires will want to set a subscription cancellation reminder before normal pricing kicks in. The special runs until Friday, May 27th
Launched in October 2007, Hulu was initially established as a joint venture between News Corporation and NBC Universal, Providence Equity Partners. The streamer became the first to add “Plus” to its name in 2010 when it launched a subscription service initially branded as Hulu Plus. It served as a home for entire seasons of programs from invested companies and other partners and featured unrestricted access to new episodes.
In 2019, Comcast relinquished its controlling share of the streamer to The Walt Disney Company, effectively becoming a silent partner. Under the agreement, Comcast’s 33% stake can be sold to Disney at fair market value in 2024. According to The Hollywood Reporter, that value will be determined at the time of Hulu’s sale. But Disney guaranteed a minimum valuation of the entire company at $27.5 billion. As of April 2nd this year, Hulu boasted a total of 45.6 million subscribers, Deadline reports.
Folks planning to take advantage of Hulu’s major discount can look forward to an extensive viewing library. The streamer’s catalog features movies and television series from ABC, NBC, or FX Networks, as well as Hulu original programming. This includes The Kardashians, Only Murders in the Building, Conversations with Friends, and Candy. Subscribers can also stream popular network favorites on the platform, like What We Do in the Shadows, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, This Is Us, Grey’s Anatomy, and more.
Disney has tinkered with various pricing and packaging strategies since taking full control of Hulu three years ago. It put the streamer’s basic tier in its popular bundle with Disney+ and ESPN+ and started offering that trio at no extra charge to subscribers of Hulu + Live TV, its pay-TV package, Deadline reports. While the current promotional price is sure to attract new subscribers, the offer is coinciding with the recent strain on the company’s finances.
On a recent earnings call, Chief Financial Officer, Christine McCarthy said that direct-to-consumer programming and production costs in the current quarter are expected to increase by more than $900 million compared to the same time last year. The reasons for the increase are higher original content expense at Disney+ and Hulu, increased costs of sports rights, and higher programming fees at Hulu Live (via Deadline).
