Sitting on a beach, sipping fancy drinks sounds like the perfect way to spend the remaining weeks of summer. But there is one thing that could make your beach visit even better. If your idea of a dream destination is a blast from the past beachside paradise unchanged by the modern world, Hotels.com has the gig for you. The popular booking website is looking for a Retro Beach Motelier who will get paid $15,000 to visit their 10 best retro beach motels across the country.

Listed like an actual job in the company’s press release, the successful candidate will receive a $10,000 travel allowance since the hotels are spread across the country, from Florida and Maine to Washington State and Southern California. There’s also a $5,000 salary to spend on whatever the person likes during their beach visits. Additionally, Hotels.com says it will provide the contest winner with sunscreen, umbrellas, vintage sunglasses, a cooler, a solar-powered AM/FM radio, and a retro Polaroid camera. The only requirement is for the winner to document their trip for future generations.

Prospective beach visitors just need to fill out an online questionnaire to apply for the summer gig. The questions are pretty unconventional too, with prompts like “If you time traveled to the 50s, who would you spend your beach vacation with?” and “Describe why the retro beach motel is your perfect somewhere.” It also asks for your Instagram handle so a solid social media presence may be an advantage. According to CNBC, the company will select a winner based on creativity and originality, quality of the submission, and fit to the theme.

If you’re worried about getting bored in the sun, Hotels.com will have your days perfectly planned out. The beach visitor’s itinerary features trips to old-school boutique beach motels like San Diego’s The Pearl Hotel and The Montauk Beach House in Long Island, New York. These destinations are based on factors like average guest ratings, motel design, price value, and location. Their commonality is a collective mix of modern amenities, retro aesthetics, and a relaxed vibe. For example, Miami’s refurbished Vagabond Hotel originally opened in 1953 and still features many of the establishment’s original design elements.

Speaking about the contest, Hotels.com spokesperson Melissa Dohmen said, “These timeless motels are not only budget-friendly but will literally and figuratively transport anyone on a beach visit back in time to truly disconnect and relax.” According to the press release, smaller boutique hotels can be more affordable than your average luxury mega-hotel. And with travel numbers rising alongside spiking gas prices and record inflation, anyone booking a beach vacation would want to save a few dollars any way they can.

Applications for the ultimate beach visit adventure close very soon, with Hotels.com planning to notify the winner by August 12th. That doesn’t leave a lot of time for people to send in their applications. But for the winner, there are still lots of time to enjoy some downtime before summer ends. The only catch is that all entrants must be at least 21 years old to qualify.
