How A Dog Named Lilo Helped To Save A Family From Homelessness
Lilo was surrendered by her loving family when they could no longer care for her due to homelessness, but the shelter helped the family keep Lilo and set them up with a place to stay.
They say that a dog is a man’s best friend. Well, this story about Lilo is definitely going to solidify that. Lilo, the fluffiest dog in the world, found herself in McKamey Animal Shelter last week after being abandoned by her owners due to homelessness. As most people know, being in an animal shelter usually does not end up well for a lot of dogs, but in a stroke of luck, Lilo’s story is a special one.
When she was left in the animal shelter by her owners, a handwritten note was attached to her collar that stated, “My name is Lilo, please love me” this note continued with a story explaining how her previous owner was a single mother of two and was recently made homeless so she could no longer afford to keep her.
Her owner did not want to give her away and tried her best to keep her for as long as possible, but given her situation, she sadly just cost too much. She finishes the note by stating that Lilo is a great dog that loves to be loved and does not deserve to be facing homelessness or left in a shelter.
The McKamey Shelter that took in Lilo shared this gut-wrenching story on their Facebook page along with a message to her previous owner. The message stated that we understand how difficult it must have been to give up a member of your family you so clearly love and are going to miss because of your difficult circumstances. We want you to know she is safe, looked after, and loved by every member of our volunteer staff. Lilo will keep her name and will be matched with a fantastic family with a warm home. But if this message does reach you, please come back and take her home, as we would love to help you with whatever you need to be able to take care of her.
The animal shelter’s message went viral, and they were bombarded with messages of support for the shelter, Lilo, and her previous owner. Not long after, the shelter provided people with an update on Lilo’s story.
Due to the response from their post, Lilo’s owner has been located, and the shelter is working with the family and other organizations to get the family back on their feet and tackle homelessness. This is the best possible outcome of this story, which just shows how social media can be used to change someone’s life.
The director of the animal shelter stated that they would do everything in their power to try and keep Lilo’s family together and back on track. Every animal given to the shelter has a story; if they can help anyone, they will do their very best.
