Cinnamon Toast Crunch saw the chance to spice up its breakfast cereal offerings and took it. Quite literally. They recently announced a new, spicy version of Cinnamon Toast Crunch called CinnaFuego Toast Crunch. It will combine the sweet base with a spicy pepper mix. Take a look below.
A hot and peppery option may not be what you expected from the beloved cereal brand. Since their first hit store shelves in 1984, Cinnamon Toast Crunch has graced many a child’s bowls. And, if we’re going to be honest, it still appears in the cereal bowl of grownups who loved it when they were kids.
Over the years, at least five unique versions of Cinnamon Toast Crunch have gotten released. These include flavors such as chocolate, dulce de leche, apple pie, and peanut butter. General Mills, the parent company, has also released holiday flavors and mash-ups that combine Cinnamon Toast Crunch with other fan favorites like Lucky Charms.
Each of these flavors has one thing in common – its sweet taste. And this is what cereal fans truly enjoy. Most of the best-selling cereals in the U.S. have some sweetness. It makes sense as the primary target market is young children, who typically love sweets. Now, the makers of Cinnamon Toast Crunch are getting ready to turn the cereal market upside down.
It may be prime time for this. With the start of the pandemic, more and more Americans are working from home now. And when you are home, it is much more convenient to snack on your favorite comfort foods nearby. Since cereal is comfort food for adults and kids, it makes sense that Cinnamon Toast Crunch would want to target that specific market segment.
Even so, how did they arrive at spicy cereal for the answer to their marketing concerns? The answer is likely multi-layered. In recent years, there has been a growing demand for spicy snacks amongst teens and adults. Spicy versions of nearly every snack food have been hitting store shelves regularly. With a new lineup, the Cinnamon Toast Crunch brand can now compete in that market.
Additionally, the marketing manager said they wanted to try something “absurd and exciting.” They certainly may have hit their mark with CinnaFuego Toast Crunch. But the Cinnamon Toast Crunch brand is also proceeding with caution during this product launch.
The new cereal will only be available in resealable bags rather than traditional cereal boxes. This packaging indicates that General Mills intends their spicy version of the cereal to be a snack rather than a breakfast item. The packages will also be quite a bit smaller, coming in at 5.9 ounces, making them closer to chip-size bags.
Not only is CinnaFuego only available in smaller packages, but it will also have limited availability. Customers will be able to purchase it directly from Walmart.com beginning August 12. For now, the new version of Cinnamon Toast Crunch will only be available for a limited time. For all you spicy food lovers out there – it may just be the treat worth hunting down.
