As technology revolutionizes the way we communicate, live, and work, as a society, we are all going to have to adapt and continue to learn more. Air tags, by Apple, released in 2021, caused quite a stir as they can track not just things, but people. The tags raised eyebrows but were also declared illegal by some airlines. But now they are allowed by Lufthansa, according to the New York Times.

Lufthansa – a German airline that immediately banned the trackers. The most useful application for the Air Tags is to put them in suitcases as one travel. If the luggage gets lost, and the airline cannot find them (it happens), you have the power to know where your luggage is!

American Airlines immediately was quick to say that the Air tags are allowed. However, German airlines said, they are  “not banned nor are they allowed” and it is up to the flight operators to determine if they were safe. This immediately set off much confusion about the technology used in Air tags.

Although Apple says that the frequency used in the Air tags is so low, it is much like Bluetooth and cannot interfere with what airplanes use to stay on course, Lufthansa was doubtful. Experts surmised that the airline was not a fan due to the number of times it lost luggage.

However, Lufthansa was on to something when they questioned the technology and its potential use. As soon as the Air tags were released into the market, reports of them being used to tracking people (yes, stalking) started to arise. People with the intent to know a person’s whereabouts at all times have been attaching them to cars.

Air Tags are small and inconspicuous. The ease of the ability to place one in a car, or even on a person’s clothing is tempting if you want to keep track of someone. Some people do use them to keep track of pets. This is a very helpful use. We should not be tracking people though!

Reports of Air Tags being used to stalk folks are putting air tags at risk. It’s not the fear of technology that can bring down planes, it’s the fear of the air tags being used for illegal behavior that Apple and the government are more concerned about.

One activist in Germany is using air tags to see if she can uncover a German spy ring, as Tell Me Best reported. This move – and many like it – have governments and agencies calling for Apple to remove the products saying the company aids in tracking private citizens.

Although this is true, technology does not bring down planes but may bring down a cheating spouse. Apple itself is having a rough go of it recently following the launch of the iPhone. The stock dipped by 4 percent, having investors raise eyebrows. More than likely the dip is just following trends that are being experienced in the Nasdaq. So, keep using them in your luggage, and find your pets and bicycles. Apple needs the bump.
