Octordle – Wordle But With Far Better Options
This article is more than 2 years old
In the year 2022, with all of the advancements we’ve made in technology and all of the amazing things one can do online, it wouldn’t seem like a simple word game would be the thing that could take the internet by storm. After all, every word ever is out there at our fingertips if we really want them, so guessing them on a daily basis just wouldn’t seem like something that would go viral. But here we are with Wordle and all of the games it’s spawned in the last year still maintaining traction. One of those is Octordle and it offers a lot of the same gameplay with a bit of a different twist on the game.
No, you won’t need eight arms to play Octordle, but it will require some strategy to figure out this game in a slightly different way than Wordle. Let’s take a look at the game. The mechanics are similar to what we already know but this version has a plethora of different options.
WHAT IS WORDLE?
Wordle is the rather simple, though no less ingenious, word game developed by the aptly named Josh Wardle in 2021 that offered a very simple premise: Guess a five-letter word in six or fewer guesses or else feel shame for an entire day because your vocabulary simply isn’t up to snuff. The game caught on quickly with an easy sharing feature and users had no problem returning day after day for the challenge and the chance to boost the stats.
Eventually, Wordle was acquired by The New York Times for a number that’s been reported to be around $1 million dollars. And that windfall, combined with the popularity and ease of the game has spawned all manor of copycats and variations, games that offer new challenges around similar mechanics and themes. One of them is Octordle which definitely offers a few more ways to play than just the standard game.
WHAT IS OCTORDLE?
On a base level, Octordle is just like Wordle except that instead of just one word to guess, there are eight. Easy, right? Well, not so much. In Octordle, game players are given eight different words to solve and as you go along, each word block will highlight which letters are correct, incorrect, on the money, or close. You have 13 guesses to complete all eight words which sound like a lot until you are in the heat of the game and those words aren’t coming. But with a strategy around which letters to use, which words to guess, and a healthy inner word count, the game is definitely solvable each day.
Like Wordle, Octordle will keep track of stats for you around the number of games played, number of wins, current streak, and max streak. One thing it offers that’s a bit different is a daily score which is based on how many guesses it took for you to complete the whole puzzle.
OCTORDLE – DAILY SEQUENCE
Where Octordle does distinguish itself from some of the other games out there like the original or even ones like Qwordle or Sedecordle, is that this one actually has a number of different versions you can enjoy on a daily basis. One of them is the Daily Sequence which has similar mechanics to the daily game with one difference.
While in the daily game you can skip around the board to solve words that look like they would be easier or have some letters filled in, in the daily sequence a player can’t move on to the next word until the first one is completed. In fact, you can’t even see the clues for the next word until you complete the current word. This adds a bit of a more complex element to the game because it’s imperative to get that first word going and other word guesses from other puzzles won’t help along the way.
And the cool thing about the Octordle sequence is that you don’t need to wait each day for a new puzzle there. The free game has a ton of options to keep you going for hours.
OCTORDLE – DAILY GOLD
Another difference between Octordle and something like Wordle is that while the base-level game is free, there is a paid subscription tier called Daily Gold which does have some built-in benefits. There are two tiers. One is Octordle Gold for $8 and then there is Octordle Gold with Sticker which runs $12.
The benefit of paying for the Gold subscription is that you get a special daily gold level game and it removes ads from the site while you are playing. There is also the chance to have a sticker associated with the account. This also allows folks outside of the United States to have access to a sticker as well.
CHALLENGES
Another interesting feature of Octordle is that they have themed challenges for a variety of different categories. These are chances to play the original game but with a certain bent to them for each clue. There are a number of different categories with all kinds of puzzles for each. They include colors, animals, patterns, US cities, countries, international capitals, rivers and lakes, Harry Potter, flowers, birds, herbs and spices, dogs, fruits and veggies, rocks and minerals, reptiles and amphibians, parts of the body, chemistry, Fortune 1000 companies, and baseball. In all, among all of the different categories, there are more than 150 additional puzzles totally free on Octordle.
In all, though Wordle laid the groundwork for this type of game to hit the mainstream, Octordle has taken it to a different level with just the sheer volume of offerings on the site. There’s a little something for everyone here and unlike Wordle where having to wait for the next day can feel like an eternity, Octordle will keep you engaged for many hours just to start.
